Rett's Syndrome

Picture
Rett’s syndrome (Rett’s) is relatively rare, occurring in one of 10,000 to 15,000 children. Early development is normal, but then the child loses mental and social skills. For example, children with Rett’s will stop talking and no longer respond to their parents.

There is a loss of previously developed motor (movement) skills, and children lose control of their hands and feet. Behaviors such as hand-wringing are common. Rett’s almost exclusively affects girls. Of those evaluated, it is usually diagnosed between ages 6 and 18 months.
