Cause of Autism
Researchers agree that there are
many genetic factors that may lead to a vulnerability or predisposition for
autism. For these genetically vulnerable children, exposure to certain chemical
and biological agents, as well as toxins, such as air pollution, pesticides,
and mercury and other heavy metals may trigger autism to develop. These areas are
currently under investigation as are the links between certain food allergies
and digestive problems.
Some autism groups and parents believe measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations, especially those containing the preservative thimerosal, cause autism. To date, the bulk of scientific evidence does not support the belief that vaccines cause autism.
