Cause of Autism
There has been an alarming
increase in the reported incidence of autism in the last couple of decades.
This increase is in part due to better screening and diagnosis. However, other
factors may play a role as well.
Although much knowledge has been gained, we still do not know the exact causes of autism. We do know, however, that there is a genetic basis for the disorder. Researchers now suspect that there are at least 10 genes and possibly as many as 100 involved. Environmental factors, such as exposure to air pollution, pesticides and heavy metals, including mercury, may play a role. There may also be a link between autism, and certain food allergies and digestive problems.
