In
addition to the behaviors described in Figure 1, children with autism may
exhibit an assortment of other behaviors. These include emotional and
behavioral problems, such as temper tantrums, aggressiveness, impulsiveness and
inappropriate emotional reactions to events and people. Children with autism
may be hyperactive, have short attention spans and be prone to
self-injury.
Some children are extremely sensitive to sound, smell, taste or touch, and some may under- or over-react to pain. Sleeping patterns may be disturbed or unusual, and odd eating habits and digestive problems are also common.
