Autistic Disorder (continued)
Repetitive behaviors, such as arm-flapping or walking on the toes,
are common in children with autism. They may also spend hours lining up their
toys rather than playing with them or become consumed by numbers, symbols or
detailed information. Many children with autism are under- or over-sensitive to
certain smells, sounds, tastes and textures, and may react to them by
screaming.
Autism is four times more common in boys than in girls. Of those evaluated, it is usually diagnosed by age 3 due to a delay in or lack of speaking.
