Although children with Asperger’s are not usually withdrawn, as
are many children with autistic disorder, they may be socially awkward and may
not be able to react appropriately to other people’s feelings. Like children
with autism, those with Asperger’s may engage in repetitive behaviors and show
an intense and narrowly-focused interest in detailed information, such as cell
phone model numbers, without a broader interest in how cell phones actually
work.
Four of every five children diagnosed with Asperger’s are boys. Of those evaluated, the disorder is usually diagnosed by age 3.
